Air Quality Index

The air quality index is a great tool for evaluating what the pollution hazards are for a particular area on a particular day. If you live in a polluted town or city, you may want to track the air quality so you can determine how much time to spend outside. If you are considering a relocation, consider using the air quality index to determine what your quality of life will be in that city.

Air pollution is huge problem around the world. It can have a large impact upon the health of citizens and the environment, which can have consequences that last for years and years. People with health problems, especially respiratory conditions, are especially susceptible to increased symptoms due to air pollution, so the air quality index system of tracking the level of air pollution is essential.

The air quality index is a system of tracking the levels of air pollution in a particular area. This can be very helpful to citizens of this area, because it can show them whether or not they need to take precautions in going outside. This is essential for people who suffer from asthma or allergies, because a high level of air pollution can exacerbate symptoms of respiratory conditions. By having a way to measure the degree of air pollution, a person can determine whether it is safe for them to go outside or whether or not they may need to wear a mask to help keep their symptoms at bay.

Each area or city has its own air quality index. This is essential, because the levels of different types of pollution vary from city to city and area to area. There are many different websites that have up-to-date air quality index results so that you will have the latest information available. Two of these websites are airnow.gov and epa.gov. These two websites allow you to input the area in which you live, so that you can find the results for where you live and spend your time.

The air quality index is measured numerically from 0-500. The higher the number on the air quality index, the higher the level of air pollution. There are different colored categories so that you can easily see what the air quality is for the day. Here is the breakdown:

  • An air quality index of 0-50 means the air quality is good. The color that is represented by this category is green.

  • An air quality index of 51-100 is considered the moderate level of air quality. It is represented by the color yellow.

  • An air quality index of 101-150 is level of air pollution that's consudered unhealthy for people, especially those who are sensitive to air pollution. This would include seniors, infants and people with existing health conditions, especially respiratory conditions. This is represented by the color orange.

  • s aAir quality index of 151-200 is unhealthy for all people. It is represented by red.

  • An air quality index of 201-300 is very unhealthy and is represented by the color purple.

  • An air quality index of 301-500 is extremely unhealthy and is shown by the color maroon.

  • By learning what the colors mean, then you can easily determine what level the air pollution is in your area. There are five different air quality index categories, due to the large number of pollutants in the air. The categories that are measured include nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, particulates, and sulfur dioxide. Knowing which pollutants may exacerbate your symptoms and what their level is will help you determine what precautions that you may need to take. By keeping an eye on the air quality index, you can help to keep yourself and your family healthier.
